The coal we produce at Xstrata Coal is used for generating electricity, industrial applications and steel making around the world and as such is vital in either sustaining or raising people’s standards of living. That matters to us.

What also matters is making a positive difference through our Corporate Social Involvement (CSI) program by creating sustainable value in the communities where we operate and in society as a whole.

These organisations deliver a broad range of services such as providing healthcare in remote communities and funding social workers who help youth in crisis make a new start in life. We’re also contributing to a sustainable future by supporting programs designed to protect endangered species and biodiversity found near our operations.

Our CSI investment gives communities access to skills and infrastructure that will endure beyond the lifespan of our operations, improve employment opportunities and attract other businesses to these regions.

This year we will continue to work closely with our CSI partners to establish mutually beneficial relationships in our communities.

Our support will help our partners create better and more accessible health services, increase education opportunities, build sustainable local businesses, and develop vibrant arts and cultural initiatives.

We recognise that we have a responsibility to maximise returns to shareholders. However, this must be achieved in tandem with an understanding of the role we play in society. What matters is that we continue to invest in the communities in which we operate to create shared value for everyone.
