Tweefontein Division 

 Description

Tweefontein is 100% owned by Xstrata Coal SA and consists of three mines – the Boschmans, Waterpan and Witcons Collieries- which have been structured into open pit, underground and surface operations. Each of the operation’s Managers report to the same General Manager.

The Tweefontein Complex is located 110km north east of Johannesburg and South of the town of Witbank close to the town of Ogies in the Mpumalanga Highveld area of South Africa.

Tweefontein’s mining authorisation area covers 113 square km. Mining operations are currently carried out on the 4 and 2 seam horizons. Coal is sourced from both opencast and underground areas with a 35:65 split. Contractor mining is used on opencast coal. All underground coal is mined with Continuous Miners. The mine produces 4.5 million saleable tonnes annually of which 2.4Mt are exported through Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) 1.15Mt are sold domestically and 0.93Mt are sold to Eskom. Reserves total 620.3 million tonnes at 30June 2005. 315.1 million tonnes are exclusive, 221.4 million tonnes are classified as underground and 83.8 million tonnes as opencast. 522.9 million tonnes are classified as measured, 79.1 million tonnes as indicated and 17.8 million tonnes as inferred.

 Brief history of the operation

Mining operations started at the beginning of the last century. Tweefontein Colliery currently consists of what were Waterpan, Witcons and Boschmans Collieries. The three mines form one of the divisions of Xstrata Coal South Africa (XCSA).

These divisions were formed during 2005. Coal is produced primarily from underground Continuous Miner sections - the mine currently produces 35% of its run of mine production from opencast sources.
