Goedgevonden Colliery

 Description

Goedgevonden Colliery (GGV) is situated 7km south of Ogies, a small town to the west of Emalahleni (formerly Witbank) in Mpumalanga. GGV is jointly owned by ARM Coal (51%) and Xstrata SA (49%). ARM Coal is in turn held by both African Rainbow Minerals (51%) and Xstrata South Africa (49%).

The main construction work will entail the establishment of the run of mine tip arrangement, coal handling and processing plant (CHPP), rapid load-out facility, rail link to Zaaiwater station, mine residual facility, provincial road diversion, offices and workshops and other supporting infrastructure.

 Brief history of the operation

Xstrata acquired GGV through its acquisition of Duiker Mining Ltd in 2002. The nearby Ogies Colliery mined the 2 and 5 seams with underground mining methods on the Oogiesfontein and Goedgevonden farms between 1907 and 1928.

The remaining coal reserves were really only re-evaluated by Duiker Mining in 1993 and a feasibility study was concluded to establish an underground mine. Following the acquisition of Duiker by Xstrata the reserves were re-evaluated, culminating in the opening of a trial mini pit. A bankable feasibility study was completed in August 2006 to develop and opencast mine.

A trial mini pit was started at Goedgevonden in May 2003, and since then has been producing at a rate of 1,200,000 tonnes per annum run of mine (ROM) coal by contractors.

 Additional information

  • The EMPR Amendment for the GGV project has been approved. This was achieved within 1 year from the date of submission of the document to the authorities.
  • As part of our commitment to Social Economic upliftment, the GGV project team has approached the Department of Labour to assist with the employment of labour from the local communities for the construction period.
