Collinsville Mine is part of the NCA Project, a mining, processing and exporting partnership that delivers high quality coal, cost effectively to international customers. The NCA Project includes the Newlands open cut operation and underground longwall operation, the Collinsville open cut mine and the Abbot Point coal terminal. The Collinsville mine is an open cut operation producing a variety of coking and steaming coal products for both overseas and domestic markets. The Project is a joint venture between Xstrata Coal (55%), Itochu Coal Resources (35%) and Sumitomo (10%).

Collinsville Coal Mine is located in the northern part of the Queensland Bowen Basin and produces export steaming coal and coking coal from the open cut mine.

Collinsville was recognised as a potential coalfield as early as 1866. After successful mining trials, first underground mining began in 1919. In 1952 MIM acquired an interest and gained a controlling interest in 1972 merging private and state owned mines. Xstrata acquired MIM in 2003.

Xstrata Coal, on behalf of the Newlands Collinsville Abbot Point Joint Venture (NCA JV), is examining the feasibility of establishing the Sarum Coal Project in the northern part of Queensland's Bowen Basin, 150 kilometres north west of Mackay and 20 kilometres south of Collinsville.
