"I’ve been with Xstrata Coal around two years. The re-planning and redesign of the eastern area of Oaky Creek coal operation in Queensland, Australia has been the most rewarding part of my work so far.
Delivering a better plan
We’re delivering a plan that has fewer physical risks but which has also brought about a slight increase in mining reserves.
It’s an ongoing process. We’re steadily working through to gain the required level of geological confidence. This geological exploration is happening in parallel with the continuing mining operation, which will naturally move into this new area.
Staying safe and avoiding delays
The biggest issue for us is making sure people are safe. The safest way is often the most efficient and easiest way. If you create a process that can always be done safely it means you don’t have interruptions. If you think about something, plan it and carry it out carefully you will achieve the quickest and most effective way of doing that task.
Compared with the other mining companies I have worked for, Xstrata Coal is far less bureaucratic. It’s simpler to get a decision made if you have a well thought out plan. Xstrata Coal is more interested in looking at new ideas and in seeking value opportunities more aggressively.
Long-term improvements
I’ve just been given increased responsibility for the long-term planning for open cut mining as well as underground mining. We have a number of exciting improvement projects. I have plenty on my plate and I’m enjoying it!”
